Every 23rd of April, Barcelona turns into a vibrant celebration of love, literature and tradition. The streets fill with roses, books and people strolling through the city wrapped in an atmosphere as unique as it is unforgettable. It’s Sant Jordi’s Day, a cherished date in Catalonia and a cultural celebration that captures the attention of visitors from around the world.
The origins of this tradition lie in the medieval legend of Saint George, the knight who saved a princess from a fearsome dragon. From the dragon’s blood, a rose bloomed – and ever since, offering flowers became a symbol of affection. Books are also given as gifts, as a tribute to the Book Day, thus adding the love for culture to this special day.
Streets full of stories and flowers
On this special day, Barcelona comes alive. From early morning, La Rambla, Passeig de Gràcia and the streets of El Born become a colourful showcase of books and roses. More than 400 stalls offer gifts for partners, family and friends. Authors sign books, there’s live music in the air, and the city becomes a celebration of storytelling, connection and shared joy.
Sant Jordi is also an invitation to rediscover some of the city’s most iconic spots. Walking past the famous façade of La Pedrera, visiting the Modernist complex of Sant Pau or taking a break in the gardens of Palau Robert are some of the day’s most popular traditions.
Cultural spaces across the city open their doors with special activities designed for the occasion, enriching the experience for locals and visitors alike.
