At Marina Port Vell Barcelona, home port for superyachts up to 190 metres, we are committed to protecting the environment. Aware of the impact that our activity has on the ocean, we promote a strict sustainability protocol with special emphasis on energy efficiency and waste management. In addition, since 2010 we have been subject to Quality and Environmental audits, which year after year accredit the renewal of the ISO14001 and EMAS certificates.
As part of our waste management and ocean conservation plan, at Marina Port Vell we use two Seabin devices, that is, submersible rubbish containers that clean our waters and collect floating rubbish.
The Seabin device: technology at the service of the sea
The Seabin Project was born out of a question that two young Australians asked themselves in 2015: “If we can have rubbish bins on land then why not have them in the ocean?”. As a result of that question now exists the Seabin Project, a sustainable initiative that, in addition to combining technology and research, has evolved into an educational project of global interest and scope.
Marinas, harbours and yacht clubs were the places chosen for the installation of Seabins, as they offer the possibility of cleaning the ocean from a controlled environment, away from the open sea and weather phenomena that could destabilise them.
The V5, which is the latest version of the Seabin, has the capacity to collect up to one tonne of debris per container a year. When submerged into the sea, the unit pumps up the water and filters out pollution like a giant ‘trash skimmer’. The Seabin is capable of intercepting floating debris, macro and microplastics, fuel, detergents, microfibres and even organic material such as leaves or seaweed. In short, it is a great ally in sustainability issues to preserve clean waters from impurities.
